Cystic Parathyroid Adenoma: A Case Study
Cystic parathyroid adenomas are a rare parathyroid pathology. Cystic adenomas are often non-functioning in nature, therefore they are rarely seen in nuclear medicine imaging. This case follows a 56-year-old female with known hyperparathyroidism who presented for a routine Tc-99m MIBI parathyroid scan. The images showed a small focus of discordant MIBI uptake in the lower right side of the neck. The patient then underwent an ultrasound examination of the neck immediately after the MIBI scan which discovered a well defined cystic lesion corresponding to the abnormal MIBI uptake. This was reported as cystic degeneration of a parathyroid adenoma.
